Mother of All Spiders

2nd December 2024 Mr Nandakumar & Beena

This painting by Mr Nandakumar elicited some research, and I was astounded by the findings. Nephila pilipes have the most significant difference in size between females and males. The female can grow up to 5 centimeters, and the male is only 5 millimeters. The reason is that the female has a significant parental investment in their progenies, with egg production and web construction. They are mainly found in rainforests in East and SE Asia. However, the painting evoked a nursery rhyme that I posted below:

The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the waterspout.
Down came the rain
And washed the spider out.
Out came the sun
And dried up all the rain
And the itsy bitsy spider climbed up the spout again.

I hope we all find something new with the art contribution on this website. I would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you.
