Walking A Dog

23rd December 2024 Cheng Hwai Jen & Beena

Hello, everyone. I am posting a painting by Cheng Hwai Jen. It is a line-and-wash watercolour painting. I love line-and-wash, but I am not very confident in my ability to paint one.

In this painting, I see a young girl walking her dog. It must be a rainy day, as she is carrying an umbrella. The background of high-rise buildings suggests an urban area. She may be living in one of those apartments. Her dog must be waiting at home for her to return from work, as she looks like she is wearing office clothes. This scene resonates with me as it reminds me of my own experiences walking my dog, Yumi.

There is a particular joy in walking a dog🫠🫠. When I take Yumi to walk, she is beyond excited. She walks on two legs with her tongue hanging out and vigorously tugging at the leash. I can barely keep up with her. She will be sniffing around for something. I thought my dog was poorly trained as she never walked by my side.

Until I read something recently it was an eye-opener. For dogs, each time they go for a walk and sniff around, they read something new. They learn new stuff from their walk. Since then, I just let Yumi run around crazy on her leash so that she gets exhausted from all the lessons she learned that day😂😂😂. So, when she comes home, she will have her dinner and settle down to sleep. I would love to hear about your experiences with walking your dog. Please share them in the comments below. 🤗🤗🙏

  1. Beena, this is one of my favourites. The original work I downloaded online on my ipad had a gloomy backdrop. After watching too many Korean crime dramas, I feared for the safety of the lone woman walking the dog. An idea hit me when I saw the gloomy, rundown almost invisble building in the backdrop. I decided to change it to a bright and cheery building and I said to myself as I painted, ‘Hi there young lady, no fear, many kindly guardian angels are watching out for you. Enjoy your walk.’ 😝
