Chef’s Table

18th September 2025 Beena

This piece was part of my classwork, but it represents more than that. It is a reflection of a chef’s table, complete with fish, tomatoes, and a cup of coffee with condensed milk. I brought this scene to life using coloured pencils and soft pastels, with each stroke part of my journey.

Many wondered whether the fish was fresh or dried. But that doesn’t matter. What matters is that this is a chef’s table preparing to cook the fish, which would include tomatoes, chillies, and, of course, garlic. Many of you have fond memories of your mum’s cooking with dried fish. Some shared their recipes. However, I don’t often eat dried fish and hence need to try out those wonderful recipes. This artwork reflects my exploration of new tastes and experiences, and my attempt to connect with shared memories through art.

Completing this piece has boosted my confidence in using soft pastels, and I have since made a few more artworks with only soft pastels. I am grateful for your constant support and encouragement throughout this journey. Thank you.
