Have You Eaten?

I received many comments on this painting of the sunset in Sibu, Sarawak. The sunset in Sibu is a spectacle to behold, with its vivid colours and the way it reflects off the river—it’s truly a unique experience. Many appreciated it, but my critic felt there was no life in it. I painted it with acrylic from a photo a friend sent me about a year ago. I admit that capturing the sunlight on the building was very challenging—painting cars is difficult—but I ultimately decided to share it.

Sibu, a distinctive place in Sarawak, is often called the New Fuzhou. It is a melting pot of cultures, with many residents being descendants of migrants from Fuzhou in China. Their unique dialect distinguishes them from other local communities, adding to the diverse cultural tapestry of Sibu.

Sibu is famed for its Foo Chow cuisine, and there is a particular semidry noodle dish I cherish. It is served at a modest stall in the old kopi tiam, overlooking the river. The stall itself is unassuming, but the noodles it offers are some of the finest I have ever tasted. Every food enthusiast visiting Sibu knows this stall. It’s a comfort food that not only fills your stomach but also imparts a feeling of security and nostalgia, making you feel good.

Sometimes, in life, that is what one needs before going to sleep. Food is crucial, as going to bed hungry makes one feel that life is not worth living. Hence, I feel that in Kuching, the greeting is always, “Have you eaten?” Because many were poor when they first arrived by boat in Kuching from China. There was a need for manual labourers. Most of them were given food as wages. Many worked hard and eventually were able to earn proper wages, raise a family, own a house or two.

Hence, that question, “have you eaten?” is powerful and laden with meaning. I would love to read others’ comments about the painting and their thoughts on this story. Please feel free to share your own experiences or reflections on the cultural aspects mentioned in the text. Your stories are just as important and valuable as mine.
