Heritage and Heart Series 1

17th July 2025 Teresa Liew

I wish to introduce Ms Liew’s passion for weaving Penan-style bags and baskets. They will be posted in series. She has written her story about her weaving below:

Heritage and Heart

Why I Started Weaving Penan Bags

I’ve always been drawn to things made with heart, especially those that carry stories, culture, and a sense of belonging.

When I first came across a Penan woven bag, I was captivated—not just by the intricate patterns and vibrant colors, but by the story behind each strand. Each bag is handwoven by Penan women from Sarawak, using traditional methods passed down through generations.

I felt a strong connection. The weaving reminded me of my love for preserving heritage—through cooking, gardening, sewing, and now, through this beautiful craft.

So I decided to learn. With each weave, I discovered not only technique but patience, purpose, and pride.

Weaving Penan bags is now part of my personal journey—one that honours tradition, empowers women, and carries stories across hands and hearts.

It’s more than a bag. It’s a bridge between generations. A quiet act of preservation. A labour of love.
