5th October 2025 Ms Wendy & Beena
Receiving Ms Wendy’s watercolour painting of the moon cakes was a delightful surprise. The Moon Cake Festival, set for 6 October 2025, is a joyful occasion celebrated by the Chinese in various countries including China, Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia.
The festival dates to the Shang Dynasty, approximately 3000 years ago, but it gained popularity during the Tang Dynasty. As usual, there are stories about this festival.
For me, the Moon Cake Festival is a time when most Chinese families gather to enjoy moon cakes with tea, wine, and fruits whilst appreciating the full moon. The moon cakes, filled with red bean, lotus seed, and many other ingredients, are a personal favourite. I particularly enjoy those with black sesame seeds and lotus paste. The sight of children walking around with lanterns at night adds to the festive atmosphere.
Ms Wendy’s watercolour beautifully depicts the variety of mooncakes and their accompaniments, from grapes to tea and wine. The festival is a celebration of diversity and unity. I wish everyone a Happy Moon Cake Festival.
