Naive Art

15th March 2026 Wee Family & Beena

When I first encountered this vibrant painting by Elvin, Olivia, and their three-year-old son Ezra, I was immediately struck by its echoes of “Naive Art” or Folk Art. During a memorable family outing, they collaborated to create a striking scene: a house perched atop the world, gazing out over a dazzling beach teeming with sea creatures. The turtle, a familiar presence on our shores, is a lovely and significant detail that grounds the painting in our local landscape.
One of the most renowned Naive artists, Grandma Moses, began her celebrated career in her seventies. Over the next decades, she created more than a thousand paintings—vivid, heartfelt portrayals of everyday farm life rendered in brilliant colors. Her remarkable journey is a testament to the enduring power of creativity, as she continued painting until she reached the age of 100.
Recently, I listened to a compelling health podcast by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, featuring a neurologist renowned for groundbreaking work on dementia. Among the key recommendations was brain training—an area where art shines. Artistic creation is not merely a pastime; it is a powerful exercise for the mind. That’s why it’s so heartening to see Ezra being introduced to art by his parents at such a young age. I urge everyone to explore these insights, as dementia is not only preventable but, in some cases, reversible through simple, consistent lifestyle changes.
