Ramu My Elephant

Hello, my friendsπŸ’ƒπŸ½. I used coloured pencils to create this delightful, cheerful baby swooshing water over her body. Colour pencil work is tricky; you must ensure you have the right paper. I used 100% cold-pressed cotton paper and polychromous coloured pencils, and for the water splash, I used another type of coloured pencils that would dilute to create a watercolour look. I was ecstatic as many found her/him to be cute. That was my intent, and I felt pleased. I was inspired by a painting I found on Pinterest for this artwork. Nyuk suggested that I write about the famous movie Haathi Mere Saathi, India’s biggest box office hit in 1971.

Our yoga class group meets monthly for dinner, and at the last dinner, the discussion moved on to movies we saw when we were young. Everyone felt nostalgic about this elephant movie. The movie was titled ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’, which translates to ‘Elephants My Friends,’ but in SE Asia, the movie’s name was translated to ‘ Elephant, my friend.’ Hmm, plural became singular hereπŸ€”πŸ€”. I wonder what happened during the translation.

I researched this movie. It was a megahit in Russia, too, and in many parts of the world. Globally, people are fascinated by a heartwarming story about love, loyalty and sacrifice. In the movie, the elephants save the orphan boy from a leopard. Eventually, the boy becomes wealthy but keeps all his elephant friends in the new zoo he built. However, when he marries a rich girl and has a baby, the wife asks him to choose between the family and his elephants. He decided on the elephants. But one of the elephants named Ramu, his best friend, sacrificed himself to bring the family together. Well, that’s a Hindi movie for youπŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—.

I have a thought-provoking question for my readers: would the wife have asked the protagonist to choose between family and friends if he married a different person who helped him in the zoo? πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ€”πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰. I am eager to read your thoughts in the comment sectionπŸ˜…πŸ™.

  1. If the protagonist had married a woman who helped him in his zoo, she probably would be an elephant lover like himself. Therefore he would probably not have to choose between his family or his elephants.

    1. That is a possibility or she could learn to love animals since she loves the protagonist:)

  2. Thank you for bringing back the memories of this famous film. It’s very unusual that during our teenage years our cinemas had a lot of Indian films and even more unusual, found a huge following among the Chinese. I guess the themes of love, loyalty and sacrifice are universal, whatever the language.

    1. Thanks Nyuk for suggesting to write about Elephant My Friend. I had to research the story as I didnt remember if I had watched it:(. But the language if love, loyalty n sacrifice does not need any explanation.

  3. The movie make me sad & I think the wife should learnt to loves the elephant if she really loves the husband.
