The Yellow Bird

10th January 2026 Suchitra Narayan

For some years now, I have been wanting to draw/paint birds..and what came to my mind always was a yellow bird..and most of all its eyes..

Yesterday, while cleaning up some old papers in my childhood home, I came across this colour pencil drawing of the yellow bird. It was a wonderful feeling of getting to see my work…the yellow bird that I always remembered from some old memory. I did not know when I had done it..but the writing on it said 11 years, with my maiden name too. It had been mounted and framed in paper. Then I remembered vaguely it was done for a children’s art exhibition at the club on a tea estate in the Anamalais where my father was the Manager on a tea plantation.

It brought me so much joy…and so I wanted to share my picture and my joy.

For more than 40 years, I had “given up” on my drawing and painting due to various life pressures. Post COVID, I decided to get back to it, and then “the  yellow bird” kept haunting me. Now that I have got it back ..its like a piece of me that was missing is back….and YES,  it beckons me to explore that creative side of me even more now.

  1. Hi Suchi

I love this little yellow bird. As you are right, the eyes speak to us, always. We must look at the eyes of humans, animals when we talk or communicate. The eyes can’t lie. One can tell a lot just by looking at the eyes.
I hope you will pick up art, as you have great potential in you. Don’t let it remain silent.

    Love
    Beena
