Trees are our Lifeline

14th October 2025 Kala & Beena

When I saw this acrylic painting by Kala, I was amazed by the detail of the tree’s roots in the foreground.

There are many reasons why trees have roots above the ground. One might be the species of tree, such as maple or dogwood, which tend to have roots exposed. Other reasons could include poor soil conditions, the need for oxygen and water, shallow planting, or an old tree that requires more space to expand.

Whatever the reasons, I find these roots fascinating. They are like old friends to me, just as old as I am. When I used to trek in the jungle, these roots were my silent companions, providing the support I needed for my feet. I am grateful for that, as it helped me to complete my trek.

Unfortunately, more trees are being cut down to make space for new development. The stories these trees hold are lost once they are removed. However, I remain hopeful that the younger generation will see the foolishness of this and demand an end to chopping down old trees, paving the way for a more sustainable future.

I encourage you to share your thoughts on the painting and the environmental impact of tree cutting. It is vital that we all understand the consequences of our actions and strive towards a more sustainable future.
