In just five months, we’ve reached a significant milestone—the 500th story on this website. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has made this journey possible. Your contributions, whether in paintings, stories, or comments, have been invaluable. When Allan and I embarked on this website, we were uncertain about its future. But seeing contributors as young as two and as old as 89 sharing their artwork has filled us with joy and gratitude😊🤗🙏.
As Christmas arrives, I’m excited to share a painting that holds a special place in my heart-Christmas at Carpenter Street, Kuching, Sarawak. This painting is not just a depiction of a scene but a reflection of my personal experiences. Ms Dona Wee’s photo of the Christmas tree inspired me to recreate the scene on black watercolour paper with acrylic paint. I’ve preserved the old street scene and added my three girls, who are always a part of my life, looking in awe at the massive tree. And if you look closely, you’ll spot me buying food from a food cart on the right side of the painting.
Let’s delve into Carpenter Street’s rich history. Situated in the oldest part of Kuching, it was the first settlement area for Chinese immigrants. Unfortunately, the original wooden houses fell victim to a devastating fire in 1884, which led to the construction of 160 shophouses made of bricks and grey tiles, as the ruler, Rajah Charles Brooke ordered.
Today, that area is a centre of attraction for tourists because of the amalgamation of different cultures despite mostly being Chinese. There are plenty of shops selling antique work, carpentry, and shops selling traditional food. Some shops have become modern cafes selling coffee and cakes ( a common place to meet friends).
I painted this for Christmas as it captures the essence of the festive mood here in Kuching. I included my girls as they are an integral part of my life. Even though Zara and Mika have passed on, leaving Yumi alone, I always feel their presence. Yumi and I wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a peaceful festive season🐶🤗.
