A Slice of Cake and Sharing

4th May 2022 Dr Beena

Hello everyone. Yesterday our group met up for a birthday lunch. We call ourselves the “5 Amigos”, a name one of them gave to the group. Some of us are retired, and others are still working. We had formed a pact that we must meet monthly, but unfortunately, the pandemic disrupted our plans. Hence it was a memorable afternoon filled with mixed feelings.

I did this picture of a slice of cheesecake as part of my art classwork sometime in early 2021 using colour pencils. I thought it was appropriate to write about yesterday’s event using this picture. The birthday cake was a baked cheesecake. We sang the birthday song in Mandarin for the first time, which was ridiculously hilarious๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š.

While we devoured the delicious cake, one of them shared his challenges in caring for his elderly parents. There were moments filled with high drama yet comical. Nevertheless, it was a reality check for all of us. One day we are all going to be there. Will we get the unconditional care that my friend is giving to his parents? Is society prepared to face such challenges that the elderly face due to ageing? Will it be entertainment for others?

The birthday boy regaled us with his adventure with an expensive pair of sandals. It was supposed to be high quality with a guaranteed free repair. Instead, he had multiple trips to the shop for repair where he had to pay, and eventually, they lost his sandals while on the repair missionโ˜นโ˜น. So, they gave him a brand-new pair of sandals. He was so thrilled that he was singing all the way home๐Ÿ˜Š. But it broke again when he reached home, to his dismayโ˜นโ˜นโ˜น. However, they reassured him and gave him the latest version of the sandals. Two weeks have gone by with no mishap, but he keeps his fingers crossed๐Ÿ˜Š.

We felt we should meet up more regularly after our lunch. Sharing helps to unburden our problems. We can’t solve many issues, but I think it takes care of the “pressure-cooker” effect that inevitably affects our health. Just like a slice of cake, it is very comforting to share. If you have such experiences, please post your comments on how you handle challenges๐Ÿ˜Š.

  1. Wow not only the cake looks tasty and yummy but the story behinds it is much more intriguing.
I like your description of pressure cooker !

    1. Hi Stef

Dont we all know how that effect feels. Thats why even a pressure cooker has a steam outlet built in:):)
