20th April 2026 Kho B C & Beena
The moment I saw Kho’s vibrant watercolour of this quintessential Kuching street, I felt compelled to tell its story. In his signature loose style, Kho captures the city’s energy: a bustling scene centred on a famous kolo mee stall drawing hungry locals. The street teems with life—cars inch forward, pedestrians weave along the narrow road, and the morning sun bathes everything in golden light. The air buzzes with anticipation as early risers gather for their breakfast ritual.
For the uninitiated, kolo mee is a beloved Sarawakian staple—curly, springy egg noodles tossed in fragrant shallot oil or lard, topped with glistening slices of barbecued pork, tender meats, and a scattering of fresh spring onions. While it’s a classic breakfast, its irresistible aroma and flavours make it a favourite at any time. It is a comfort food that many who leave to study overseas long for deeply.
