Unity In Diversity

When I saw this photo that Mr. Mani sent to me as a “Good Morning” post, I was instantly drawn to it. Initially, I only noticed the steps and yellow flowers (laburnum). In Malayalam, these flowers are mandatory during Vishu, our New Year, which usually falls on the 14th of April. However, as I began painting, I noticed the house in the background and was reminded of the “Tharavadu” or the ancestral homes of Kerala.

These houses have a unique concept of families living together. Generally, there is a central courtyard with all the rooms around it. The house layout features north, south, east, and west wings. There is a common kitchen where food is prepared, making meal times delightful. Each day is a delightful surprise. Many fruit trees and vegetables are grown in the compound for consumption. As a young kid, I loved those breezy afternoons napping in the lazy chairs, awakened by the wonderful aroma of the snacks for tea time.

The architecture is exceptional. Because of its construction, it remains cool even on the hottest days. However, whether the structure was inspired by ancient Chinese house architecture or vice versa is uncertain. The ancient Chinese martial art Kung Fu was inspired by Kalaripayattu (the ancient martial art of Kerala). Kerala and China share a long and strong trade history.

I would love to hear your thoughts about this painting and how this story emerged because of the house hidden in the background. I loved the concept that beautiful things emerge when we live in unity with others. The importance of unity in diversity is a powerful message that we often overlook. Division will weaken us, and that simple theory is lost on mankind. We still choose to live by colour, race, religion, caste, wealth, and many other factors. Has it brought us any peace?
