Heliconias Of The World

7th July 2024 Mr Nandakumar

I have posted a line-and-wash painting of Heliconias. This painting was a unique experience for me as I experimented with different techniques and approaches. In this type of watercolour painting, you can either draw the outline first with ink and then fill in the colours or the reverse.

Heliconias come in vibrant colours and are in many varieties. I painted a common type, as you can see anywhere. They are hardy and resilient, and despite harsh conditions, they thrive. Some people are like Heliconias. They thrive despite everything.

There are many world leaders, and one that comes to mind is Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. Like Heliconias, their aura brought the vibrancy of their belief to the world, i.e., the greater good of humanity. Next time you see a Heliconia, I hope you will view it in a different light. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

  1. I can’t help seeing the big black something – a mega scale butterfly? But the heliconias certainly shine through. As a metaphor for the world leaders, this elephant in the room can be rightly dismissed. Am I reading too much into it? 😊
