17th September 2024 Ms Wendy & Beena
The Mid-Autumn festival, depicted so beautifully in this Chinese-style watercolour painting by Ms Wendy Fung, evokes a sense of wonder. The sight of those mooncakes in her painting instantly brought back lovely memories of this enchanting festival, filled with the glow of lanterns and the sweetness of mooncakes.
My family loves mooncakes, especially my mom. Her favourite is the one with dried fruits and nuts. The traditional mooncake is a round pastry about 4 inches in diameter with a thin crust. The cake has a filling of different types of seeds, such as black sesame, red bean, lotus seed, fruit, and nuts. Some will have a salted egg yolk in the centre. The mooncake’s crust is delicate, while the filling is rich and sweet, with a hint of saltiness from the egg yolk. Usually, mooncakes are eaten with family and friends, accompanied by lots of tea.
The children will walk around with lanterns after dinner. With the moonlight filling the place and a gentle breeze, it is a serene and calming experience to treasure. The festival always fills me with a sense of warmth and nostalgia, reminding me of the joy and laughter shared with my family and friends.
