Black and White Sleepy Head Series 1

27th September 2025 Lo Yen Yen

It is my utmost pleasure to introduce Ms Lo Yen Yen. Her strength in art lies in ceramics. She has explained how she creates her beautiful artwork. I preferred the black sleepy head over the white one. However, I loved the black and white tail of the bed of the white sleepy head.

These are my favourites and are very different to the type of work I make to sell.

These two have been fired in a communal pit about 5 feet deep for two days. Before firing, I wrapped each one in newspaper together with combustibles such as dried banana peel, seaweed, eggshells, eucalyptus leaves, tea leaves and red peppercorns. They were then placed in a corner at the bottom of the pit with the rest of the potter’s pieces. Sawdust and a huge amount of wood were piled over and on top to feed the fire. Once the fire died down, we left everything to smoulder in the ashes. Digging through the ashes the following day to find my work was rather anxious as I wasn’t sure if my fragile sleeping heads had survived the fire with all that weight piled over them. In fact, I was very prepared to find broken remnants. But they survived and were all intact! They had tipped over, the bits which were buried in the sand remained pale, whereas the exposed sides were completely black. There are very subtle orange/yellow colours which are the result of the seaweed and banana peel coming into contact with the clay.
