6th July 2026 Lavender & Beena
Lavender’s acrylic painting vividly depicts a reindeer family set against breathtaking mountains and lush greenery. Her artistry captures not just the beauty of nature, but also the warmth and joy of a close-knit family, inviting viewers to imagine themselves in this serene, idyllic setting.
Reindeer stand apart as the only deer species where both males and females proudly bear antlers. Navigating the unforgiving Arctic and tundra, they rely on a thick double coat for warmth, while specialized veins in their noses ingeniously heat frigid air before it reaches their lungs. Unique among deer, reindeer have been domesticated and have shaped the culture and livelihoods of indigenous peoples such as the Sami for generations.
Male reindeer, driven by instinct, gather impressive harems of 5 to 15 females each season, forging fleeting bonds that dissolve once the mating period ends. Each year brings new partnerships, a testament to their ever-shifting social world. When pregnancy arrives, the female breaks away to deliver her calf in solitude, forming an unbreakable bond through vigorous grooming. Her milk, a nutrient powerhouse rich in fat and protein, ensures the calf’s robust start. Only when her young can walk does she rejoin the herd, finding safety in numbers against relentless predators like wolves.
Lavender’s painting not only introduced me to fascinating facts about reindeer, but also reminded me how powerful art can be as an educational tool. A single artwork can inspire curiosity, spark learning, and foster a deeper connection to the natural world.
