Cup Size Matters

5th December 2021 Dr Beena

Hello, guys๐Ÿ˜Š, are you ready for the weekend of “Mung”? I look at this painting; it just shouts “Mung or Niksen” in a Teacup. This is an art class work where our teachers gave us the assignment to develop ideas about a teacup.

If you were to look at mine, it captures surrealism. I am relaxing in a pool in a teacup๐Ÿ˜Š.ย  Zara and Mika look at their mommy in bewilderment, who has shrunkโ˜นโ˜น. Now I wonder if they are thinking about how I will feed them? Will their food shrink tooโ˜น? Hahaha!!

However, it got me thinking. Tea and coffee are served in different cup sizes. In Kuching, even if I ask for a small cup, the waiter will say, ” oh, we only have standard size”. That means a cup of 500ml of sweet liquidโ˜นcalled “kopi tarik (pulled coffee)”. However, in Europe, it depends on the type of coffee that you order. If it is an expresso, it will come in a small cup, and a cappuccino will come in a large mug. In India, coffee is served in a tumbler and dabarah. It is a stainless- steel cup in a wide, deep saucer. That is because the coffee is piping hot, and one needs to pour it into the saucer to cool it down. There are more types of these delicious brews from Turkey, Vietnam and many more places.

For Oriental tea, it is truly an experience as it is a ritual of having the tea leaves steeped in a pot with boiling water and served in tiny bowls. The first few times, it is like drinking hot water, but as the tea leaves get more infused, you will get the taste of the tea๐Ÿ˜Š. Nonetheless, it is about enjoying the drink, a Hygge moment.ย  One delightful memory of drinking tea was mint tea; it is etched in my memory๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š.

My title says, why cup size matter? It is because, sometimes, you really wish for a large cup of tea or coffee. At other times, a small one would suffice. Why is that crucial in enjoying a cuppa? It is no longer enjoyable to drink coffee or tea more than I wish. I do not have satiety. Satiety is vital to feeling contentment.

I would love to hear your thoughts on a cuppa๐Ÿ˜Š. Stay safe and be at peace with your Hygge moment until the next musing.

  1. Again, I learned something, this time about the many ways one can serve, or be served coffee. I come from a family of proud coffee connoisseurs and Imust confess that am a disgrace to them: I only like cafe au lait which looks rather like just plaon milk. However, I do feel that each drink, whether hot or cold does taste better in its appropriate cup, mug or glass and please, whatever the brew, never in a plastic cup! Santรฉ!

    1. ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€ that’s something I too don’t like. Hot beverages in a plastic cup๐Ÿ˜ช. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
