Rivers of Kerala

3rd May 2025 Kala & Beena

Hi everyone, since we are discussing Kerala, I wanted to share a painting by Kala. It depicts a typical Keralan scene featuring water, boats, and coconut trees.

Embarking on a journey from the northern part of India to the south, you’ll be greeted by a striking contrast: the lush, vibrant nature. Whether you’re on a train or a road trip, the sudden emergence of greenery is a refreshing sight to behold.

Kala’s painting beautifully captures the essence of Kerala, a land traversed by 44 rivers that all originate from the Western Ghats. Water serves not only as a means of trade and daily commute, especially in places like Alleppey, but also as a symbol of life. Coconuts, essential for cooking, along with other parts of the tree used for various purposes, are central to the lives of Keralans, reflecting the deep-rooted cultural significance of this versatile fruit.

Coconut, a superfood with numerous health benefits, is a staple in Keralan cuisine. If you’re fortunate enough to come across a Keralan restaurant, don’t miss the opportunity to savor their unique dishes. They’re a rare find, but the experience is truly worth it.
