The Mystery of the Birdhouse

22nd May 2024 Joy & Beena

There’s a certain thrill in unravelling a mystery within an artwork, and I just experienced that. Can you believe it?πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜… I was captivated by Joy’s painting of a birdhouse adorned with two delicate birds in watercolour. As my knowledge of birdhouses was limited, I embarked on a journey of discovery.

Let us discuss birdhouses. We know they are artificial human creations for birds. However, not all birds need a birdhouseπŸ€”. If you are clueless like me, if you get a birdhouse or build one yourself, you can attract predators like feral cats and snakes😨😨 and kill the birds. A farmer in the US built a row of birdhouses, and the bear came along and destroyed them. Due to deforestation, birds are losing their natural habitat.

One such example is the Eastern Bluebird. That is why we see paintings of birdhouses with the Eastern bluebird like the one that Joy has painted🫠🫠. After I read that these songbirds nearly became extinct in Europe in the mid-20th century, people started to build birdhouses for them, and their numbers increasedπŸ‘πŸ½. That was something new that I learnt this morning. Thank you, JoyπŸ€—.

We need nature more than the reverse. Nature can survive without us. However, if we preserve nature with knowledge, we get to enjoy it. I love the chirping of birds. Birds used to make nests in my plants. When the eggs hatch, it is incredible to see how their parents hover around them to feed the chicks😍😍😍. Let us enjoy the small things of life wherever you are and share them here for us to learnπŸ™

Writing for this platform has been a journey of discovery, expanding my knowledge on various topics. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share these musings with you, and I encourage you to share your thoughts and insights. After all, through these interactions, we can deepen our understanding and appreciation of the world around us🫠🫠.

  1. “One Earth” says it all.
    Should realize, we’re mutually dependent.
A small act of kindness can bring a great change in our nature 🌹

  2. What a beautiful painting Joy … can’t take my eyes off it… so delicately balancing the colors and the vine gently creeping over. Transported me to musing and being with nature.
Loved reading your write up Beena from your research into bird house … the only creature that builds houses for long term use are humans I believe…. everything else abandons their home or nest after rearing their babies and live and sleep in the open. It is sad that despite all the scientific progress we have evolved as a species more fearful of each other.

  3. You have brought the painting alive! Thanks, Shobha. I hope that I will do the same… for my art work as you have mine. Thanks for your comments.

  4. Beautiful shades of green, it speaks out as different stages of life one can have. Embrace the moment. Cheers!

    1. Apologies for delay to reply. I remember that I was quite disheartened as I failed to catch the shade of brown of the house….to compliment the greens. How wrong I was as the colours dried and blended nicely by the morning! Thank you for your comments.

  5. Nature has always fascinated me. The birdhouse with its small opening in the house welcomes life and opens us to delight in new possibilities.
Like your research, I m learning too !
